Every year in October, Hunter and I take off on a hunting journey consisting of a few days in the mountains together. This year we had the opportunity to spend time in Southern Utah. We had never hunter there before and had no clue where we were going. So Jake, Hunter and I took off on a Friday night without knowing where we were going to stay and headed South.
On our way to nowhere in the middle of the night, we came across a small deer in the headlights. When we pulled up to it, the deer looked injured like it had been hit by a car. Jake and I got out of the truck to see if there was something we could do for the poor little thing. As we walked up to it, it was apparent the deer was hurt and in shock. We did what we thought the humane thing was and put the deer out of its misery and drug it off of the road. That was a different experience.
We continued driving into the night to see if we could possibly find a place to stay. I was getting worried when we had driven for about an hour without really seeing any sign of human life. As we almost gave up hope and decided to turn around, we came upon an ugly little town called Antimony, UT. We drove through the pitch dark town looking for any sign of life and didnt see anything. I think we must have blinked. So we decided to turn around and head back towards Beaver, UT to see what we could find. We really must have blinked the first time, because as we drove back through on our way out, we drove past a place called the Rockin Ranch. It was a large building that had some lights on so we decided to stop. We went inside and sure enough, they had a room for us.
Anyhow, we spent a couple of fun days in the Southern Utah Mountians in and around Koosheram, UT hunting the Monroe mountain range, the Dutton range and others. It was a fun experience to see some country other than where we usually spend the hunt. We saw well over 100 deer and several bucks, but didnt get a chance at a big one.
When it was all said and done, we had stayed in several little hotels, eaten in a few crappy little diners, and had a fun time driving and chatting about life.
I am greatful for the state that we live in and the opportunities that are provided for me and my family. I cant wait for next year!
p.s. We were actually successfull hunters after all. We did clear that injured deer off of the road after the first night.
